Rockhampton and Yeppoon to welcome student-athletes for the Northern University Games in July 2017

The largest university sporting event to be held at Rockhampton and Yeppoon this year, the 2017 Northern University Games, was launched today at Central Queensland University.

Expected to attract more than 1,600 student-athletes from across Queensland and northern New South Wales, the 2017 Northern University Games will be held from 2-6 July and will include 18 sports.

Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp is pleased to see the event held in vibrant Central Queensland cities Rockhampton and Yeppoon.

“Regional university sporting events provide student-athletes with the opportunity to pursue a dual education and sport pathway, which results in both tertiary qualifications and sport participation at all levels of sport across Australia,” Mr Knapp said.

“Sport programs on campus are proven to contribute toward higher levels of student recruitment, retention, completion of study and employability.”

The annual event encourages highly valued traits through sport participation including good sportsmanship, interpersonal skills and promotion of health and fitness by bringing together student-athletes of all strengths and abilities.

Hosting the Northern University Games provides CQU students fantastic opportunities to participate as athletes, officials or volunteers whilst also representing their university.

CQUniversity Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman says the Northern University Games will provide CQUni students with some fantastic opportunities to participate as athletes, officials or volunteers.

“The Northern University Games will give CQUni students the chance for some great sporting and social outcomes,” Professor Bowman said.

“Students will find there are potential career benefits in participating in terms of developing their graduate employability.

“Our local Rockhampton community will also benefit from economic, social and networking opportunities as a host city for these Games.”

Livingstone Shire Mayor Bill Ludwig said he was looking forward to joining Professor Scott Bowman and Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow in welcoming the 1,600-plus student-athletes and their families, from as far as northern New South Wales, to the Capricorn Coast and Rockhampton Region.

“This is a very significant step towards Council’s long-term vision of establishing the Capricorn Coast as one of Queensland’s premier sports tourism destinations and I want to commend the organisers for bringing the Northern University Games to sunny CQ and helping make that vision a reality,” he said.

“In addition, it also helps ensure our local youth - specifically CQUniversity students - have access to the same opportunities as their metropolitan counterparts through study and extracurricular activities.

“These Games are very much a welcome addition to our ever-growing events calendar and will inject millions of dollars into the local economy while the athletes and their families enjoy some downtime on the Capricorn Coast and spectacular Southern Great Barrier Reef,” Mayor Ludwig said.

The 2017 Northern University Games is one of four Regional University Games held simultaneously across Australia, with a range of sports serving as the qualifying competition for the 2017 Australian University Games (24-29 September) on Queensland’s iconic Gold Coast.

The Northern University Games is managed by Australian University Sport (AUS), the governing body of university sport in Australia, and hosted by Central Queensland University in partnership with Rockhampton Regional Council and Livingstone Shire Council.

The Games relies on the participation of the local community to make up the strong volunteer contingent who assists organisers to run the Games. Event organisers encourage any students looking for valuable work placements, or any members of the Rockhampton and Yeppoon communities who want to be involved, to visit http://www.northernunigames.com.au/volunteer for details.
